Ellie Mae Left Us Today.

For those who have been following my blog, you may remember Ellie Mae. He was a chick I raised in a cookie jar,.Thinking he was a she,I named him Ellie Mae,only to find out later, She was a He.Nevertheless we raised him to a full grown rooster, then turned him in with the hens. He became very mean, and attacked anyone who came into the pen. We have since gotten many more roosters, not by choice, but when you raise your own chickens from eggs, you tend to get lots more roosters than you'd hoped for. Our goal was to get more laying hens.Needless to say, there was a lot of feuding going on in the chicken pen.We will never know exactly why Ellie had such a short and sickly life, but he got quite poorly several times in his short life. The constant feuding amongst the flock was likely a big part of the cause.

When he was agitated for whatever reason, his comb would turn a deep purple. For several days lately, his comb was purple. I figure it was when he was stressed. He got really mopey lately, as he had done a few times in the past, but this morning,Pop ask me to check to see if I could find him. He had roosted in Pop's garage, but Pop was not able to locate him this morning, when he went out to do the feeding. He asked me to check on him, which I did,and found his cold body ,where he had passed away in his sleep. We loved Ellie. Lately, he would come to the door, wanting his daily treat, like he had done as a youngster. It seemed, some times, he would forget that he had been so mean and flogged the daylights out of my legs the day before. He would come, expecting me to give him, the same loving treatment I had given him as a chick, which I always did. I miss those days when he was an adorable little chick, but all I need do, is to look at the scars on my legs, and it all comes back to me, the mean grown up rooster he grew to become. We'll never know what made him turn out to be so mean, or why he had such a short life. We'll miss him.

The Man!

Here is an up to date picture of the rooster that I raised in the cookie jar. We have stopped letting him out to come to the house daily, so I think he has finally figured out that he is a chicken. Not only a chicken, but "The Man"of the house. The only Man. Hopefully he will figure out just what his responsibilities are. We'll see what happens this Summer when it comes time to set a few eggs to replenish our flock.
(He is the white fellow in the back.)

Is Ellie Mae Smarter than the Average Chicken?

We have never raised and became attached to a chicken like we have Ellie Mae.We will need to come up with another plan on how and where to keep HIM. Yes,it turned out He was indeed a rooster, after weeks of calling him Ellie Mae.Several of my blogger friends had similar cases where they had named pets and found out later in the game that they were the opposite sex from what they originally thought. They left the name as it was, so we are doing the same.(although he gets called lots of other things when he get on our nerves, which is quite often)He thinks he is a house chicken, which of course, he was until he outgrew the cookie jar. Then he was a garage chicken until it became unbearable to use the garage without someone(ME)cleaning for a day.Whenever the coffee drinkers are here, he jumps on their laps wanting whatever he thinks they are eating. He gets to be more worrisome than cute.He paces from door to door wanting in the house to get a snack.
Today being Flea Market Day,although we do have a slight rain here,Pop took the other 4 roosters, which we had raised from chicks, out of the main pen,in hopes of putting Ellie Mae in with the hens.(Pop had hopes of finding someone at the Flea Market who needed roosters, since we don't have the heart to kill and eat them, being pets, you know.) Well. the plan for putting Ellie Mae in with the hens, is not working out so well, yet. I took HIM and a pan of house scraps to the chicken pen, turned the hens out in the pen, gave them the scraps to scratch around in, and came out, closed the gate, and went back into the house. I worked around the house for about 5 minutes, then I decided to open the door to take a peek at how he was doing with his new flock. In the house he came. How he got out of the pen,and that quick,is a mystery to me. I'll try cropping one of his wings, just in case he flew over the fence. You'll just have to watch for an update to see how this unfolds.
